6 On The Square will host an opening reception for local artist Johanna Lerwick from 6 to 8 p.m. today at 6 LaFayette Park in Oxford. The exhibit of wildlife oil paintings runs through Jan. 27.
Lerwick is a self-taught oil painter born and raised on an upstate New York farm, a media release said. She credits farm life and exposure to animals as her initial inspiration.
The release said for years Lerwick only considered art as a hobby, allowing her to step away and explore the United States, Mexico, Africa, the Amazon and the South Sea Islands. This fueled her desire to paint, to share what she had seen and express her emotions as art, the release said.
The artist paints landscapes and seascapes from her home in Norwich, but her main focus is wildlife subjects, the release said.
“When I create a painting, it’s more than paint on a brush,” Lerwick said in the release. “To me, it is bringing an animal or scene to life. I want to paint the experience of nature.”
Also this weekend, Six On The Square will host a performance by Doug and Telisha Williams. The old-time country and honky tonk duo will play at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Jeff Katz of Ragzine said of the pair: “We were captivated by their twangy sound. Doug is a pretty mean picker and Telisha, well, Telisha’s voice is the second coming of Patsy Cline.”
While the exhibit opening is free, concert admission is $15 in advance and $18 at the door. For more information, call 843-6876 or go to www.6onthesquare.org.
