'Charlie Brown' to open in Oneonta

The Daily Star

---- — Sing a Song of Broadway & Co., a recently formed independent local music and theater group, will present the original Off-Broadway version of “You’re A Good Man, Charlie Brown” in Oneonta, by arrangement with Tams-Witmark Music Library Inc. in New York City.

The original “Charlie Brown” went into rehearsal Off-Broadway in February 1967 with 10 songs, a few long scenes, producers, technical supervisors, scene designers and 10 years’ worth of Charles M. Schulz’s drawings from “Peanuts” comic strips, but no script. The play by Clark Gesner, performed widely by professional, regional and community theaters, is a collage-like collection of what evolved on stage during rehearsals and performances of that original run of 1,597 shows at the Theater 80 St. Marks in New York City.

The music for the play, also composed by Gesner, reflects the philosophical and humorous spirit of Charles M. Schulz’s comic strips.  A four-piece orchestra combo will accompany the Sing a Song of Broadway actors as they perform the roles of Charlie Brown, Lucy, Schroeder, Linus, Patty and Snoopy.

Performances are scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday, 4 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday in the First United Methodist Church Hall at 66 Chestnut St. in Oneonta. Tickets are available at the church by calling 432-4102 and can be purchased at the door before performances. Local checks will be accepted but not credit cards. The cost is $5 for ages 12 and younger, $10 for students and $15 for adults.
