---- — NYSMF season begins in Oneonta

The New York Summer Music Festival begins its first programs of the season Thursday with a faculty performance.

Concerts will feature performances from three student ensembles: Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Select Jazz Ensemble as well as chamber and solo performances by NYSMF faculty and guest artists Jungeun Kim, Ida Kavafian, Peter Wiley and Jason Ham. 

Ham will perform  on euphonium at 8 p.m. today, and NYSMF Chamber Orchestra, featuring Kim, Kavafian and Wiley will perform at 3 p.m. Sunday. All concerts will be held on the State University College at Oneonta Campus at Goodrich Auditorium in the Fine Arts Building. All concerts are free and open to the public.

On Sunday, the Chamber Orchestra will offer a performance of the complete Concerto in C Major, Op. 56, “Triple Concerto” for Violin, Cello, Piano and Orchestra. The Wind Ensemble and the Select Jazz will also perform.

  

Closing party set for ‘Record Breaker’

There will be a closing party for “Record Breaker” from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday at the Orphic Gallery in Roxbury, with a performance by Zonder Kennedy.

“Record Breaker,” which will be on display through Sunday, features the work of Greg Frederick, an artist from Williamsburg, Brooklyn, who creates portraits of rock and pop icons from shards of vinyl record albums and covers. Frederick will be at the event.

Kennedy, a blues guitarist from Hamden and New York City will perform at the closing party with his band The Scoville Junkies.  It was through the commissioning of a portrait of Kennedy by his wife Lata and her suggestion to gallery proprietor Phil Lenihan that the Orphic invited Greg Frederick to mount his show at the gallery, according to a media release.

The Orphic Gallery is at the Roxbury Corner Store at 53525 State Highway 30.  

 

Concerts by the lake to start

The Cooperstown Lakefront Concert Series will kick off its ninth season in scenic Lakefront Park. The Village Parks Commission will again host the venue for nine musical performances. Area bands and soloists will perform a wide genre of music, according to organizers. 

The family-oriented concerts are showcased on the historic bandstand at 7 p.m. Tuesday in July and August. People are encouraged to bring a lawn chair, blanket and dancing shoes. There is no charge.

Leading off the season on Tuesday will be Heaven’s Back Door. This is a quartet of acoustic musicians interpreting traditional and contemporary blues and jazz along with their own original compositions.   

The remaining concert schedule of events is July 9: New York Players; July 16 and Aug. 6, Cooperstown Community Band; July 23, New Horizons Barbershop Chorus & Full Circle Quartet; July 30, Wild Women Don’t Get the Blues; Aug. 13, The Saints Jazz Quintet Plus One; Aug. 20: Flame; and Aug. 27, The Donny Brooks.

 Cabaret Night set in Jefferson

The Jefferson Historical Society will host Cabaret Night with the Patti Van Tassel Trio at 7 p.m. Friday, July 5, in the Maple Museum at 221 Creamery St. in Jefferson. This event is free to the public.
