Bright Hill to feature 'Nature's Intaglios'

The Daily Star

---- — Bright Hill Literary Center’s Word & Image Gallery will showcase “Nature’s Intaglios,” an exhibit by Gerald Scheck, through May 24. The exhibit will open Sunday with an artist’s talk and reception from 3 to 5 p.m.

Gallery hours are 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday and Tuesday, 9 a.m to noon Wednesdays during Word Thursdays events (May 9 and 23), and by appointment. The gallery is free and open to the public.

Bright Hill is at 94 Church St. in Treadwell.

Scheck, who lives near Delhi, was born in 1940 in New Jersey, the son and grandson of metal workers. He worked in the family welding business until the age of 19, when he took up painting. He was seeking other ways to express his interest in art, which included sculpture and film making.

More than 30 years after he began painting, he was introduced to printmaking by Hella Viola. With his experience in welding and metal working, he took to the intaglio medium, which involves etching images on metal plates. He is known for his extensive work in mezzotints and as a painter and sculptor. Scheck was chosen by Bill Moyers for a feature interview on PBS as part of the series “Creativity with Bill Moyers,” which further led to his inclusion in articles in Smithsonian magazine, among others.

His works are in numerous corporate and private collections and have been shown in many exhibits, including the Dorsky Gallery in New York City, the Mahler Gallery in Washington, D.C.; Frank W. Cyr Center Gallery in Stamford, the Community Arts Network of Oneonta, Grosvenor Gallery in Cobleskill, and the State University College of Technology at Delhi, the Cooperstown Art Association,  Ulster County Art Center, the Museum at Hartwick College and the Blue Nun Gallery in Oneonta.
