---- — The Martin-Mullen Art Gallery in the Fine Arts Building on the SUNY Oneonta campus will open an exhibition of abstract expressionist Robert Neuman on Monday. A gallery talk and reception for the artists will start at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Offered in collaboration with the Sunne Savage Gallery, the show includes paintings, unique works on paper and prints from Neuman’s “Space Signs Series.”

The artist is a second-generation abstract expressionist who addresses regional, historical and metaphysical themes in his artwork, a media release said. He is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship to Barcelona, Spain, and a Fulbright Grant to Stuggart, Germany.

Neuman has developed 16 series of work during the course of his more than 60-year career.

Started in 1966, the “Space Signs Series” was inspired by contemplating space travel under the night sky of Downeast, Maine, where the artist owns a summer home, a media release said. It is a progression from Neuman’s “Pedazo del Mundo (Pieces of Our World) Series,” which he began in Boston in 1961 as a response to his time in Germany and Spain. While abroad, Neuman was influenced by the people, cultures and religions, the release said.

Neuman “composes geometric, optical abstractions, similar to constellations, of brightly colored circles,” the release said. He also uses abstract imagery, color and stamping.

The show runs through Dec. 14. For more details, call 436-3456.
