Exhibit to bid farewell to area artist

The Daily Star

---- — The Art Garage in Cooperstown will host an exhibition and sale featuring colorful large-scale works on paper by former area resident Deborah Geurtze.

The exhibit will be on display beginning Sunday and continuing through mid-February, with a two-day opening reception from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday and 5 to 7 p.m. Monday.

Geurtze recently moved from Syracuse to East Gloucester, Mass. From 1984 to 2009, she made art in a Toddsville studio. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Art and Design, Geurtze has garnered numerous awards for her detailed hand-colored etchings as well as for her monotypes.

“Deborah consistently manages to capture the heart and soul of our woodlands and landscape yet still offers the viewer the freedom to engage one’s imagination,” Art Garage owner Sydney Waller said in a media release. “It would be a shame for these works that so lusciously celebrate our special part of the country to leave without a solo show.”

In addition to referencing the Otsego County region, Geurtze’s work also includes themes inspired by the Adirondacks, where she worked for the Adirondack Park Agency preserving visually sensitive viewsheds and rare wild habitats.

Geurtze, who co-founded Danny’s Main Street Market, also volunteered her time to the Cooperstown Art Association for many years, where she served as co-president and established its year-round program.

The Art Garage, at 689 Beaver Meadow Road, will be open daily Dec 17-23. Call for hours: 547-5327.
