---- — Brooklyn’s Sweetback Sisters are bringing their “Country Christmas Singalong Spectacular” to the B Side Ballroom in Oneonta on Dec. 21.
Emily Miller and Zara Bode, who perform as The Sweetback Sisters, sing precise, family-style harmonies recalling country music from the 1950s and 60s such as the Davis Sisters, the Louvin Brothers, Wanda Jackson and Loretta Lynn.
The Country Christmas Singalong had its start in 2009 at the Jalopy Theater in Red Hook Brooklyn.
“The audience knew songs like ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ and ‘Walkin in a Winter Wonderland’ by heart because they’ve been singing those songs for most of their lives,” Miller said in the release. “I was so moved hearing the entire audience sing that I knew I wanted to recreate it.”
The tradition continued for the past four years, and in July, the Sweetback Sisters recorded a Christmas album based on the singalong shows at Philadelphia’s Turtle Studios.
The album begins with “Christmas Boogie” by the Davis Sisters. The song is a retelling of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas with a 1950s boogie-woogie twist. “Santa Claus is Coming to Town” is the lead single from the record, which opens with a quote from Bonanza.
The show will start at 7 p.m., and lyric sheets will be provided. For more information about the group, visit www.thesweetbacksisters.com. For information about the venue, visit bsideballroom.com.
