Dinner and theater production set in Worcester

Catskill Community Players will offer a dinner and theater performance of “The Red Velvet Cake War” on Friday through Sunday, June 7 to 9.

Dinner will be at the Worcester Inn at 151 Main St. in Worcester at 5:30 p.m. for the Friday and Saturday performances, with the show at 8 p.m. at The Wieting Theatre. The Sunday performance will be at 2 p.m., with dinner to follow.

“The Red Velvet Cake War,” with producer Diana Friedell, is a Southern comedy by Jessie Jones, Nicholas Hope and Jamie Wooten. In the production, cousins Peaches, Jimmie and Gaynelle are planning a Verdeen family reunion, in Sweetgum, Texas. If the eccentric relatives and family scandal aren’t enough to throw the plans off track, tornado season will spin things out of control. The play takes its name from the plot’s high-stakes wager over who bakes the best red velvet cake.

Gary Koutnik, actor and retired educator of Oneonta, is directing the production with stage management from Kyra Wehmeyer of Jefferson.

Playing the three cousins are Kristin Sloth as the frazzled Gaynelle, Abbey Koutnik as the saucy Peaches and Diane Stammel as the “rough around the edges” Jimmie. Also featured are Sue Pearson as the prisspot Aunt LaMerle, Scott West as the lovestruck Newt, Linda Reese as the psychologist Elsa, Ben Friedell as family patriarch Aubrey, and Laurie Wehmeyer as the nosy neighbor, Bitsy. In double roles are Diana Friedell playing Cee Cee, a sassy TV hostess, as well as Mama Doll, and Whitsun Koutnik playing Sheriff Lout and Purvis Verdeen.

Tickets for dinner and show are $35 for adults, $30 for seniors and $20 for students younger than 10.  Tickets for the show only are $15 for adults or $10 for seniors and students. Reservations and tickets may be obtained in advance at the Worcester Inn, or by calling the Worcester Inn at 397-8500. Home-baked refreshments will be available by the Worcester Woman’s Club.
