Area Entertainment Roundup: Show to benefit railroad repairs

The Leatherstocking Railway Historical Society and the Cooperstown & Charlotte Valley Railroad will present a benefit concert featuring Folding Sky at 7 p.m. Saturday.

Proceeds will help make ongoing track repairs on the railroad.

The train will be parked next to the Milford Depot at 136 E. Main St. in Milford during the event, which will include food and alcoholic beverages.

'Art by the Lake' set at Fenimore

The Fenimore Art Museum, at 5798 State Route 80 in Cooperstown will host "Art by the Lake" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the museum's lakefront lawn.

The fifth annual juried art event will include plein-air painting demonstrations, exhibits of work by contemporary landscape artists, music, educational programs, lawn games and samplings of New York state food and beverages.

Artists will be judged in watercolor, acrylic, pastel, oil, pencil, paste and more.

Admission to the event is included in the museum entrance fee: $12 for adults, $10.50 for seniors and free for children 12 and younger, as well as active and retired military.

Smithy to host music, storytelling

Smithy Center for the Arts will host two events this weekend at 55 Pioneer St. in Cooperstown.

At 7 p.m. today in the courtyard, gypsy jazz band Babik will perform.

According to a media release, the group is inspired by Django Reinhardt and was called "on fire" by ArtVoice Magazine.

Tickets are $12 for adults and $8 for children 12 and younger.

Saturday at 7 p.m. brings the Smithy's Storytelling Series, will a performance of "From the Past to the Present" by professional storytellers Marni Gillard, Karen Pillsworth and Maria Johnson. An open mic will follow. The series is free and open to the public.

Gallery to present jazz improv night

The Gallery, at the corner of Main and River streets in Stamford, will present Ork-S-Tra, a seven-musician jazz band, at 8 p.m. Saturday.

The group will perform mostly improvisational compositions with jazz standards mixed in throughout the night.
