Deadstring Brothers set for B Side

The Daily Star

---- — Deadstring Brothers, along with opener Bovina-based band Esquela, will perform at 8 p.m. Saturday at B Side Ballroom and Supper Club at 1 Clinton Plaza in Oneonta.

“Cannery Row,” Deadstring Brothers’ fifth album, will be released April 9. The band includes front-man Kurt Marschke on vocals and guitar and Jeremy Mackinder on bass.

According to Deadstring Brothers’ label Bloodshot Records out of Detroit, “‘Canary Row’ has a loose-limbed melancholy reminiscent of the Laurel Canyon folk scene, the outlaw Nashville days, as well as the upstate New York counterculture spirit of the Band.”

Mackinder said in a media release that “Canary Row” is completely “analog. No computer touched the vinyl version of this album at any point. The mixes were done live. This is a pure album full of performances: No edits; no auto-tune — real musicians doing it the way it was meant to be done.”

The band is likened to “Exile-on-Main Street”-era Rolling Stones, the release said, with “a menacing sound that draws equally from the sorrow of country ballads and the abandon of rock and blues. The band’s music is deeply rooted in the storytelling and instrumental traditions of Hank Williams, Johnny Cash and the American Outlaw movement, but is also informed by the song structure and understated aggression commonly associated with Detroit bands.”

Following the B Side show, Deadstring Brothers will play at the South by Southwest Official Showcase in Austin, Texas, followed by a Scandinavian tour in April.

Esquela recently completed its second album and will play selections from it at the show, in addition to tracks from its debut album “The Owl Has Landed.” The band calls itself a “roots with soul” band, the release said.

Cover charge for the show is $5. For more information, go to
