The Catskill Choral Society will honor the spirit of the holiday season with “J.S. Bach’s Magnificat & Other Seasonal Selections” as part of its 44th season. Performances will be at 7:30 p.m. today and at 3 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church at 66 Chestnut St. in Oneonta.
New Music Director R. Colin Armstrong will lead the 60-member group, joined by accompanist Timothy Horne and a chamber orchestra, for the annual holiday concert.
“Magnificat in D” will be highlighted by five soloists: Soprano Barbara Paterson, lyric baritone Brad Hougham, soprano Johana Arnold, mezzo-soprano Kasey Stewart and tenor Steven Nanni.
The Latin text of “Magnificat” — taken from the canticle of Mary, mother of Jesus, as told in the Gospel of Luke — details the events of the Visitation: When Mary visited her cousin Elizabeth (mother of John the Baptist) and spoke of her faith and the impending birth of both of their sons.
In addition to the Bach piece, the group will perform “Cantique de Jean Racine” by Gabriel Faure, “Christmas Day” by Gustav Holst and “Salvation is Created” by Pavel Chesnokov, as well as lead the audience in classic holiday favorites such as “Hark! The Herald” and “Joy to the World.”
Tickets may be purchased in Oneonta at The Plains, Green Earth and Artware; in Cooperstown at Augur’s Corner Bookstore; in Unadilla at Country Computers & Publishing; in Sidney at Corky’s Wine & Spirits; from any CCS members; and at www.catskillchoralsociety.org.
