'Walking Toward America' returns to Open Eye

The Daily Star

---- — “Walking Toward America,” by Sandra Fenischel, will return to the Open Eye Theater at 960 Main St. in Margaretville. Performances will be at 7 p.m. Thursday to Saturday, Nov. 3, and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4. The show made its world premiere at the Open Eye during Memorial Day weekend.

Patricia Van Tassel stars in this one-woman show based on the memoirs of Ilga Katais Vise, who fled with her family from Latvia during World War II.

According to theater Trustee Dr. Elizabeth Sherr: “Near the end of World War II, Latvia was occupied by Nazi Germany and at the same time was being invaded by Communist Russia. In this less-known saga of Eastern Europe, hundreds of thousands of families left their beloved cities and farms, and headed West. The story of their 500-mile trek on foot is filled with danger and hardship. And yet courage, warmth and even humor shine through.

“The family spent its time in a forced labor camp, in a U.N. refugee camp and endured an Atlantic storm on a former troop ship en route to New York Harbor.”

Van Tassel portrays Katais at ages 4, 10 and 16, as well as her parents and relatives, various fellow refugees and German military personnel — more than 30 character in all.

Violinists Cedric and Curtis Taylor will perform traditional Latvian music during the show.

Admission is $18 for adults, $15 seniors and $10 for youths up to age 25.
