Puetro Rican vocalist Taina Asili and Sicilian guitarist Gaetano Vaccaro will perform at 8 p.m. today, along with flamenco dancer Nina Kunimoto, at The Gallery, located at 128 Main St. in Stamford.
Asili was named Albany’s 2011 Best World Music artist with her ensemble Taina Asili y la Banda Rebelde. She and partner Vaccaro traveled to Andulasia, Spain, in July to study flamenco music and dance. This is their third trip to Spain in the past two years, studying with some of the most renowned flamenco musicians of contemporary flamenco, a media release said. This summer they participated in an intensive workshop series at El Centro de Arte y Flamenco (the Center of Art & Flamenco), studying with renowned flamenco vocalist Esperanza Fernandez. They also received daily instruction at the flamenco school Taller Flamenco (the Flamenco Workshop), working with flamenco recording artist Alicia Gil and guitarist Francisco Moralecs.
Kunimoto has studied flamenco dance worldwide, including her ancestral homelands of Spain and Japan, the release said. She teaches at the Luminz Studio in Brattleboro, Vt.
