Six On The Square at 6 LaFayette Park in downtown Oxford, will host “First Lady of Woodstock” Melanie at 7:30 p.m. Saturday.
Folk-pop singer-songwriter Melanie, with more than 30 albums, has been performing for more than 40 years.
According to a media release, she’s associated with the No. 1 (roller skate) song “Brand New Key.” The 1972 hit sold more than 3 million copies worldwide and was awarded Billboard’s No. 1 top female vocalist. She has release almost one album every year since 1969, and almost all were produced by her late husband manager, Peter Schekeryk.
She’s won an Emmy, opened a restaurant and written two musicals — “Ace of Diamonds,” about Wild Bill Hickok and Calamity Jane, and “Melanie and The Record Man — A Musical Memoir, about her life with Schekeryk in which she stars.
Melanie began her career playing folk clubs in Greenwich Village in the mid-1960s. Before becoming well-known for her performance at Woodstock, the artist found chart success in France and the Netherlands.
At Woodstock, she performed “Lay Down, Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)” alongside Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin.
She’s also performed at Royal Albert Hall, Carnegie Hall, the Metropolitan Opera House and the Sydney Opera House. She appeared on television shows hosted by Ed Sullivan, Johnny Carson and Dick Cavett.
Her songs have been covered by Cher, Dolly Parton and Macy Gray.
