Gouache focus of CAA exhibit

The Daily Star

---- — A reception from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 5, will open two exhibits at the Cooperstown Art Association at 22 Main St.: “Two Generations of Gouache” by Daniel J. Harrington and Daniel K. Tennant in Gallery A and “Into the Light,” acrylic paintings by Mimi George, in Gallery B. Both shows will run through April 24.

Harrington was the grand prize winner in the CAA 2011 Regional Juried Art Show “Essential Art.”

In a media release, Harrington said: “I have had a love for drawing for as long as I can remember. Growing up I became very interested in art, but I had no real direction or guidance. The moment when everything clicked for me was at my grandmother’s funeral. I was 13, and that was when I saw my first Daniel K. Tennant painting.”

Tennant has been Harrington’s long-time teacher and mentor, introducing him to gouache (opaque watercolor). Harrington has been painting with gouache as his sole medium for 19 years, the release said.

Tennant also uses gouache as his only medium, with his work done on a larger scale and exhibited across the U.S.

Jamesville artist George considers herself a representational artist with an impressionistic focus, the release said.

“Light and the way I perceive it are vital to my work,” she said in the release. “My landscapes tend to be intuitive, textural and atmospheric, inviting the viewer to interpret the moment. My abstract works sometimes seem to be directing me rather than the opposite, with emphasis on pattern, color and texture.”
