Steel Wheels heading to Cooperstown

The Steel Wheels are an Americana musicians who blend blues, bluegrass, old-time sing-alongs and fiddle tunes.

Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, this four-piece string band mixes old-time music traditions with its own sound.

According to a media release, the group members are “renowned for their raw energy and chemistry on stage, where they often cluster tightly around a single microphone to adorn Trent Wagler’s unmistakable tenor with bell-clear harmonies inspired by their shared Mennonite heritage.”

In addition to Wagler, other band members are Eric Brubaker on fiddle, Brian Dickler on upright bass and Jay Lapp on mandolin.

The group’s album, “Red Wing,” earned critical praise, the release said, and spent 13 weeks on the Americana Music Association’s Top 40 Chart and cracked the top 10 on the Euro Americana Chart. The Steel Wheels were nominated for five Independent Music Awards in 2010, winning Best Country Song for “Nothing You Can’t Lose.”

The band’s latest record, “Lay Down, Lay Low,” sat in the AMA Top 40 Chart for 10 weeks. National Public Radio named “Rain in the Valley” from the album as its Song of the Day, saying it “heavy hymn … is sparse and dense all at once.”

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for seniors and college students, $8 for students and those 12 years old and younger attending are free. For more information, call 547-1812 or go to
