Free concert series to be offered in Norwich

The Chenango Blue Association’s free Thursday concert series in Norwich’s East Side Park will kick off Thursday with the Cris Jacobs Band, which played at the series last year.

Jacobs, who spent 10 years fronting The Bridge, is a songwriter and guitar player.

The July 17 show will mark the return of Zydeco musician CJ Chenier. The son of “the King of Zydeco,” Clifton Chenier, Chenier’s musical style ranges from the traditional music of his father, up to modern funk with a healthy dose of blues, R&B, and swamp pop, according to a media release.

July 24 will feature the Boilermaker Jazz Band performing its tribute to Benny Goodman.

The last show of the series will feature NBT Bank Concert Series stalwarts the New Riders of the Purple Sage. The Norwich stop has become tradition on the band’s annual summer tour. The band was started more than 40 years ago by John Dawson and Jerry Garcia and is led today by original members David Nelson and Buddy Cage on lead guitar and pedal string guitar. They mix classic hits such “Panama Red” with new songs and covers.

All the shows begin at 7 p.m. The rain location is the Chenango County Council of the Arts Martin Kappel Theatre.

The Blues Association will also host a Summer Jam concert on Saturday, July 26. Information on all the events of the Chenango Blues Association can be found at
