RAG to host night of blues and roots

Blues and Roots musician Rory Block will perform at 7 p.m. Sunday at Roxbury Arts Center, at 5025 Vega Mountain Road in Roxbury.

Rolling Stone said of Block’s music: It’s “some of the most singular and affecting country blues anyone, man or woman, black or white, old or young, has cut in recent years. Blues Revue said, “Rory Block is one of the greatest living acoustic blues artists … she can hold her own with the legends.” And fellow musician Bonnie Raitt said Block “has been an inspiration to me since we started out years ago. Her guitar playing, singing and songwriting are some of the most soulful in traditional and modern blues.”

Her influences include Son House, Mississippi Fred McDowell and Robert Johnson, a media release said, and she will head to Roxbury after playing at a blues festival in Norway and gigs across the Northeast. She calls her tour her “masters” tour, “honoring the greats who influenced and guided her into becoming the interpreter of country blues and roots music that she is today,” the release said.

Opening for Block will be country bluegrass band Mason Dixon, featuring regional musician Jim Kopp on vocals, guitar and bass, along with Larry Sliker on vocals, fiddle, mandolin, guitar and banjo and Marc Meccia on vocals, guitar, mandolin and fiddle.

Tickets are $19 for adults and $17 for seniors and students. Children 12 years old and younger will be admitted free. For more details, call 326-7908 or go to
