Music festival to close with tour, quartet

The Cooperstown Summer Music Festival will present two concerts in the coming week.

The first will be "The Grand Tour: Vienna, Madrid and Paris," at 3 p.m. Sunday at Otesaga Resort Hotel, 60 Lake St. in Cooperstown.

It will feature violinists Laurie Carney and Daniel Avshalomov of the American String Quartet, cellist William Grubb, pianist Shirley Irek and flutist Linda Chesis.

The concert program will include pieces by Madrid's Turina, Vienna's Beethoven and Paris' Faure.

The second performance will be the festival's finale for year by the Juilliard String Quartet at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24 at the Farmers' Museum. The museum is at 5775 State Route 80 in Cooperstown.

The concert will be an all-Beethoven program, featuring the "String Quartet in C sharp minor, Op. 131" and the "Quartet in A minor, Op. 132."

The four members of the group are violinists Joseph Lin and Ronald Copes, violist Samuel Rhodes and cellist Joel Krosnick. The quartet has performed 500 works, including the premieres of more than 60 pieces by American composers.

Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for those ages 6 to 18 for each concert.
