---- — Smithy Center for the Arts is will kick off its season for The Smithy Pioneer Gallery on Monday, with an opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. The first show will honors the Smithy member artists. In addition to the artwork, Stoddard Hollow String Band will perform live in the courtyard and, there will be hor d’oeuvres, wine and beer courtesy of Brewery Ommegang.
Titled Person, Place, Thing, the exhibit celebrates member and guest member artists by expanding the annual member show beyond the second floor to include all three floors of the gallery, presenters said in a media release. With this show, the artists explore the crux of who they are: the people, places and things that inspire them to create.
On the first floor, Place will be the main feature and the exhibit will be curated by local landscape painter and Smithy Member Susan Jones Kenyon. The second floor will tackle Person and be curated by landscape and portrait painter Tracy Helgeson. Thing is the third floor theme, andphotographer Edward Garbarino will curate. Throughout the gallery, the work of SCA’s pottery students and teachers will be highlighted.
The gallery itself has undergone some renovation. Sseveral walls built in the last few decades to create a storage room on the second floor have been knocked down to expose the original brick and wood walls and the floors and joists have been restored, replaced and refinished. The restroom has also been upgraded. The courtyard is now outfitted with bistro tables and chairs.
The gallery opening kicks off what the summer season at SCA. In addition to the exhibits, there will be a concert series running every Monday night in July and August, theatrical productions, including “The Compleat Works of William Shakespeare Abridged,” “The Heidi Chronicles,” and “Flowers for Algernon,” theater and pottery camps, regular pottery and painting classes, a community play festival and more.
