---- — Oneonta Concert Association will kick off its 85th season with Scotland’s Battlefield Band at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at Oneonta Theatre, 47 Chestnut St. in Oneonta.
Battlefield Band was named 2011 “Folk Band of the Year” by popular vote at the Scots Trad Music Awards, according to a media release.
The “exhilarating Celtic group peppers its traditional, high-energy, foot-stomping fare with a touch of American soul,” the release said.
The Edinburgh (Scotland) Evening News called the band “a national treasure,” and The Washington Post said of a recent concert, “a wondrous perfectly paced display … a Highland jam that rang the barn’s rafters."
The band has toured internationally for 40 years, often stopping in 60 cities a year in the United States.
The group features Alasdair White, Mike Katz, Sean O’Donnell and Ewen Henderson on vocals, fiddle, bagpipes, small pipes, guitar, bass, piano, whistles and bouzouki. The band has released more than 30 albums, the latest being last year’s “Line-up.”
Tickets are $25 general admission and $6 for students. Subscriptions for the whole season are also available for all five concerts. For more information on subscriptions and other concerts in OCA’s season, call 433-7252 or go to oneontaconcertassociation.org.
