---- — The Martin-Mullen Art Gallery at SUNY Oneonta will open its 2012-13 spring gallery season on Monday with “Moments in Time,” an exhibition of more than 30 paintings, prints and works on paper by local artist Lisbeth Firmin.

A contemporary American realist known for her urban landscapes, Firmin left New York City in 2000 and bought an old storefront in the village of Franklin, where she paints every day, according to a media release from the college.

About her work, Firmin said, “My urban landscapes, following in the tradition of earlier realists such as John Sloan, George Bellows, and Edward Hopper, depict a feeling of human solitude, of people headed somewhere undisclosed. I am not interested in producing a literal translation of my subject matter, aiming instead to ride the line between abstraction and realism, letting the viewer put things together. I am intent on capturing the energy and light of a specific moment in time.”

Firmin’s work has been exhibited in hundreds of solo and group shows across the country and internationally. Recent exhibitions and awards of note include a retrospective exhibition in 2011 at the Taft School in Watertown, Conn., featuring painting and prints from 1994-2010. In 2010, Firmin’s monoprint, “Heading to Work, Varick Street” won “Best in Show” in WSKG’s annual Art in Motion Competition in Binghamton.

Firmin will give a gallery talk at 4 p.m. Thursday; an artist’s reception will follow in the gallery lobby. Moments in Time” will run through March 20.

Located in the Fine Arts Building, the Martin-Mullen Art Gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays when the college is in session and during special events. For more information , contact Gallery Director Tim Sheesley at 436-3456 or visit
