Fly Creek artist's collages to be on display

“Chromatones,” collages by Fly Creek artist Amy Cannon, will be on display Thursday through Aug. 5 at The Garage at 689 Beaver Meadow Road in Cooperstown.

The show free will open from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday. There is no admission charge. The Garage will be open daily by appointment, noon to 4 p.m. Fridays and 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesdays for a weekly “Open House to Meet the Artist”; and also, for those who are interested, to discuss upon some period Surrealism writers.

Cannon, originally from Connecticut, is a longtime resident of the Cooperstown area. She invented the term “Chromatones” to describe her collage. Cannon, a graduate of the Parsons School of Art, is known for her precious metal jewelry. The collages represent a new body of work for Ms Cannon, who has exhibited her work locally, regionally, and nationally including at the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens, Ga., Silvermine Guild in New Canaan, Conn. and The Views in Bala Cynwyd, Pa.

Intrigued by collage and its relationship to the subconscious for at least a decade, in 2002 Cannon curated “Collage as Metaphor” at the Cooperstown Art Association, which show explored the symbolism inherent in the work she selected.

Inspired by Surrealist artists such as Dali, Magritte and Joseph Cornell, she arranged “‘colored strokes of paper’ in unpredictable ways ... (that are) intuitively chosen, altered and applied in a painterly manner as to harness my energy through the power of color,” she said in a media release.

The Garage is a private alternative space on Beaver Meadow Road less than a mile outside Cooperstown that periodically curates exhibitions to share with the public. Past projects include “From India and Nepal to the Taj Garage” and “Lavern Kelley: The Art of Logging.” For more information, contact or 547-5327.
