---- — 21-year-old leads group

The West Kortright Centre in East Meredith will present a night of jazz music from the Grace Kelly Quintet at 7 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 13.

Kelly is a 21-year-old alto saxophonist, singer, composer and arranger who so impressed Wynton Marsalis in her three-night stand as guest of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, that he invited her to join his ensemble at D.C’s Kennedy Center for Barack Obama’s first inauguration celebration, according to a media release. In this concert her band — Jason Palmer on trumpet, Evan Gregor on bass, Jordan Perlson on drums, and Pete McCann on guitar — will perform standards and Kelly’s originals with her on sax and vocals.

She has received the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers Foundation’s Young Jazz Composers Award in 2007, 2008, 2010 and 2011 and was named one of the Top 10 College Women in 2011 by Glamour magazine. She has been voted Best Jazz Act in Boston four consecutive years in the FNX/Phoenix Best Music Poll,  named winner of the 2013 Jazz Act of The Year in the New England Music Awards; and for the fourth year in a row has been named by Downbeat Critics Poll one of the Alto Saxophone Rising Stars.

According to a media release, she first sat at the piano at age 6, tried the clarinet at 8, and discovered the sax at age 10. She began studying with Lee Konitz at age 13. When she was 14 years old, Boston Pops conductor Keith Lockhart asked her to play with the orchestra. Kelly met the challenge by writing her first full orchestral arrangement and performing it in Boston’s iconic Symphony Hall. Kelly has performed in 20 countries and as a leader in more than 500 concerts at prominent venues worldwide.

She graduated from Berklee College of Music at 19 and has eight recordings on her own PAZZ label.

Tickets for this concert are $28, $25 for WKC members or $11 for those younger 19, available through The Centre by phone at 278-5454 or online at www.westkc.org/performances.
