Madison Miller and Mariah Ruff scored second-half goals Sunday as the Oneonta High girls soccer team defeated Marcellus, 2-1, in the Class B state championship game at Cortland State.
The Yellowjackets, who entered Saturday's final-four round as the top-ranked Class B team in the state, completed a 20-2-1 season under 10th-year coach Jerry Mackey with the first state title in the 40-year history of their girls soccer program. They advanced to Sunday's final with a 2-1 defeat of Section Five's Hornell (16-5-1) on Saturday at Cortland High.
OHS is the first area high school soccer team to win a state crown since Edmeston tied S.S. Seward for the Class D girls title in 2008. Oneonta also is the first area soccer team to win an outright state title since Downsville's girls won the Class D championship in 2005.
The Jackets also won the Section Four Class B and Southern Tier Athletic Conference championships this season.
Section Three champion Marcellus finished 20-2-1.
