Drug "kingpin" arrested in Otsego County

Dante Darren Major of Hobart charged with four felonies

— The arrest of a major drug kingpin in Otsego County was announced today by Sheriff Richard J. Devlin Jr. and District Attorney John M. Muehl. Following a year-long investigation by a number of law enforcement agencies, Dante Darren Major, 35, of Hobart, was arrested on the following drug felonies, Otsego deputies said:

Operating as a major trafficker -- a class A-1 felony punishable up to 20 years; first-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance -- a class A-1 felony, which carries a sentence up to 20-years; and two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, class B felonies that are each punishable up to 12 years in jail.

According to deputies, Major acted as the director of the drug-trafficking organization for oxycodone powder, an opiate painkiller, that was recently seized in the investigation. He made more than $75,000 profit on the sales, the deputies said.

He was indicted by an Otsego County grand jury Monday 19 on a sealed indictment, and an arrest warrant was issued Tuesday. Later that day he was stopped by state police for a traffic violation on state Route 10 in Delhi and turned over to the Otsego County Sheriff’s Office on the warrant.

He was arraigned Wednesday by Otsego County Court Judge Brian D. Burns and sent to Otsego county jail on $750,000 cash bail or $1.5 million bond. He has two previous felony convictions and is scheduled to appear April 20 for further proceedings, deputies said. He faces up to 15 years to life if convicted.
