State Police find body in Norwich

Awaiting autopsy results to confirm identity

A woman's body was found this morning in the rear of the Wal-Mart store in Norwich, a short distance from where a car belonging to missing Krista Kosowsky was found one day earlier, police confirmed.

However, police said they were awaiting autopsy results to confirm the identify of the remains that were located a short distance from the city of Norwich waste water treatment plant.

The body was recovered by State Police divers after it was located by three Norwich Police officers who were being assisted by a police dog.

Police said many acres of flooded fields were searched by troopers and state forest rangers after Kosowsky was reported missing.

Authorities confirmed that Kosowsky's husband, Gary D. Kosowsky, is a former public school science teacher who served prison time after being convicted of giving poisoned candy to fellow teachers at the Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk school district in Albany County in 1992.

Two teachers and a school custodian became violently ill after they ate candy laced with mercuric chloride, an insecticide, officials said at the time. When he was arrested in connection with the poisoning episode, Gary Kosowsky was still on probation for having previously been conivicted of stealing nearly $100,000 from a volunteer fire company, authorities said.

Norwich Police said on Monday that Gary Kosowsky has been very cooperative in the investigation into his wife's disappearance.

Krista Kosowsky, 51, was last seen on Friday, police said. She did not report to her job that day in Clinton. Police said she is a diabetic who reportedly did not have her insulin with her when she went missing.
