Oneonta man charged in murder conspiracy

---- — An Oneonta man was arrested Thursday for conspiring with and agreeing to pay someone to murder another person.* 

According to a media release from the Otsego County Sheriff's department, Maxie James Godfrey, 62, of Oneonta was charegd with second-degree conspiracy and criminal solicitation, both felonies, after he agreed to pay an undercover DEA agent to murder another person. Godfrey is himself an inmate at the jail, where he is being held on $10,000 bail related to criminal sexual act and domestic violence charges.

Godfrey's arrest was the result of a three-week joint investigation that included the Drug Enforcement Administration Albany District Office and the Otsego County District Attorney’s Office with assistance from the New York State Department of Financial Services Criminal Investigations Unit.  

Godfrey was arranged on the new charges and returned to jail without bail. If convicted, he faces up to 32 years in state prison. District Attorney John M. Muehl is prosecuting the case.
