Man arrested on counterfeiting charge

Failing to pay child support can get non-custodial parents into hot water, but paying with fake money can compound the legal troubles, as a former Otsego County man is now finding out, authorities said today.
Eugene J. DeCarlo, 34, was arrested at a Maine jail Thursday and extradited to New York after he was charged with using counterfeit cash to pay child support over the past winter  to a woman residing in New Lisbon, the Otsego County Sheriff's Department said.
The bogus currency included two $100 bills with identical serial numbers, officials aid.
DeCarlo, who has also resided previously in Copake, Columbia County, is on parole, officials said. He has two previous felony convictions, for first-degree forgery and forging a medical prescription.
Authorities said he forged stolen checks to buy prescription drugs at pharmacies in Cooperstown and Oneonta in 2009.
After being arraigned before Worcester Town Judge William J. Fischer, DeCarlo was remanded to Otsego County Correctional Facility without bail.
Due to his criminal record as a twice-convicted felony, DeCarlo faces up to 15 years in prison if convicted of the new charge of first-degree criminal possession of a forged instrument.
