The National Weather Service at Binghamton has issued a severe thunderstorm watch until midnight for an area that includes Delaware and Otsego counties.
As of 9:30 p.m., NYSEG reported more than 27,000 customers without power, 1,800 of which were in Delaware County (mostly in the Colchester and Hancock areas).
Tonight's storm hit more severely to the west of the local area, with thousand of customers in the Syracuse, Utica and Rome areas without power. The NWS also reported that a tornado had been spotted earlier in the Rome area.
