---- — Civic pride will be on display in Masonville on Saturday, an organizer of a community cleanup said. Volunteers will have a chance to spruce up the hamlet’s streets and sidewalks and get together with neighbors in the event, which is scheduled to run from 9 a.m. to noon.

Masonville General Store owner Kendal Craig, who is organizing the event, which begins at “the four corners,” said she came up with the idea after attending a town board meeting.

“Community is such an important thing,” she said. There is not always time in today’s society to talk with neighbors.

This is an opportunity for people to get together and do something for the community, she said.

This includes picking up litter along the roadway, sprucing up the sidewalks and planting flower bulbs along state Routes 8 and 206 in the hamlet.

David Hamburg, a spokesman for the state Department of Transportation, said his agency is providing hard hats and reflective vests for the volunteers.

It also is working with Craig to provide training needed for them to work safely in the roadway.

“We are happy for them to do it and appreciate their effort,” he said. “It’s great for the community and great for the roadway.”

Officials met with Craig on Tuesday to provide the proper training, Hamburg said. They will work with her to get whatever permits are needed.

According to a media release, “volunteers are asked to bring gloves, tongs, shovels and “your love for Masonville.” The rain date is Oct. 21.
