Mayor declares city-wide fitness challenge

More than 30 individuals gathered at the State University College at Oneonta’s Craven Lounge in Morris Hall on Sunday to learn about a new community fitness program that aims to bring Oneonta together as a healthier and happier community, according to its creator.

Stacy Mitchell, personal trainer, fitness instructor and owner of Body By Stacy in Oneonta, was on hand to speak about her “All-Star Fitness Challenge,” weigh new registrants and answer questions about the program, which she designed to foster and encourage physical and nutritional values, she said.

A representative from Mayor Dick Miller’s office was also present to read a proclamation from Miller that designated April 13 as “All-Star Fitness Challenge Day” and urged Oneontans to participate in the 10-week wellness program.

“Stacy’s enthusiasm is contagious,” Miller said, “and I’m grateful to her for doing this.”

Mitchell said ever since she was young, she has wanted to change the world.

“When I’m walking down the street, I see people and I want to stop them and say, ‘I can help you,’” Mitchell said.

Almost 80 percent of cancers and diseases in the United States are caused by poor diets and lack of exercise, Mitchell said, but she believes Oneonta residents can break the mold, take control of their health and start a nation-wide change with the All Star Fitness Challenge.

The program, which will begin on April 21, has both a paid, full-membership option and a free “city challenge” option, and both are open to all ages. Paid members will have access to a slew of fitness classes at the Body By Stacy studio, Mitchell said, and the free option will include: weekly, group nutritional meetings at her studio; grocery shopping classes where experts will help you learn what’s in your food and how to make healthy choices; weekly, family-friendly, at-home workout videos via Facebook; bi-weekly weigh-ins; a fun, family scavenger hunt across the city mid-program; and 24/7 personal guidance from Stacy, herself.
