Hartwick dance club scores high marks

A Hartwick College dance club had success at a recent competition, two of those involved said.

More than 22 students from the college’s Orchesis Dance Club accepted an invitation to compete at the Sunday collegiate dance invitational at State University College at Cortland, club president Rachel Stein said.

The students competed in a variety of categories against their peers at SUNY Cortland and Oneonta and Lock Haven University in Pennsylvania, she said. An effort to reach someone from SUNY Oneonta on Thursday night was unsuccessful.

When the team was asked by the SUNY Cortland dance company to participate, “We thought it would be a great experience for everyone,” Stein said. “We did well and got really good feedback from the judges.”

Club adviser Janet Bresee said: “It was a wonderful opportunity for the team. It came out well.”

“It was a great opportunity for us,” Stein said. “It pushed us out of our comfort zone, for a whole new experience.”

From the Hartwick team, Alyssa Militello won a solo award; Stein and club Vice President Kristen Paolucci won a first-place award as a duo. Hartwick second-place awards were won by Emilie Solandt, Cody Cupit and Emily Keaney.

Paolucci said she and Stein have been dancing, mostly jazz and tap, since an early age and have competed previously. Both started in the club as freshmen and plan on graduating in May.

Paolucci said she plans on attending graduate school and will be teaching dance to beginners in Albany, where she lives.

Stein, who comes from Falmouth, Maine, will also be attending graduate school to study elementary education.

“It will be cool to incorporate dance into my class,” she said. “It’s something you can use your whole life.”
