Antique tractor to pull this weekend

---- — A tractor pull in Davenport Center on Saturday will be anything but ordinary.

Featured in the pull will be an 88-year-old Fordson tractor owned by two local men who plan to donate the machine to an area museum.

The event at the Christensen Farm in Davenport Center will highlight a tractor that came to the area after having been purchased in Afton in 1924. The tractor passed through the hands of a few other local owners before winding up with its present stewards, Charlie Zimmerman of Davenport Center and Charlie Stokes of Bainbridge.

According to them, it was Zimmerman who brought the old girl back to life, and it is he who will be driving the tractor at Saturday’s pull.

Zimmerman said his interest was sparked by early childhood experiences as a boy on his father’s farm in Davenport driving and working with an identical tractor in the 1940s.

According to Zimmerman, Henry Ford built these tractors between 1913 and 1932, producing 1.2 million units and revolutionizing the farming industry with the first small farm tractor and selling for $700.

Stokes and Zimmerman said they plan to donate this Fordson to the Hanford Mills Museum in East Meredith eventually.

The Christensen Farm, a third-generation farm, is sponsoring the all-day event, which is open to the public.
