ONEONTA -- Things old and some new, along with food and arts and crafts, will be for sale during the 33rd annual Grand and Glorious Garage Sale downtown from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
"We're expecting a very big event," Kathy Tobiassen, a coordinator of the sale. "There will be well over 100 vendors. … It's very interesting to walk downtown and see the variety."
Theatrical and music performances are planned, along with sales by downtown merchants, Tobiassen said. Oneonta Farmers' Market retailers also will be present.
The event is a main fundraiser for the Catskill Choral Society, a group that performs concerts featuring a range of genres as well as new works.
The sale usually generates about $4,000 for the group, and is a huge help toward meeting expenses, such as hiring musicians for performances, Tobiassen said.
Many vendors are local, she said, but some come from outside the immediate area to set up shop for the day.
Lynn Price of Oneonta said she and her husband will set up to sell all kinds of knickknacks, household items and other things from "buttons to zippers." Having experience in the antiques trade, Price said, she is accustomed to buying and selling trinkets and collectibles.
"I have a tendency to gather more than I use," Price said. The Grand and Glorious Garage Sale gives her an opportunity to make room for more, she said, and the social atmosphere at the yearly event is an added pleasure.
"It's just always a lot of fun," she said. "We enjoy it very much."
Price said their assigned retail spot is outside City Hall, and this is their third year participating.
Food vendors will be among the mix, Tobiassen said. She and two other committee members, Marcia Bowne and Will Attanasio, have been concentrating since May on organizing this year's sale event.
Highlights also include a noontime performance by the Oneonta Community Concert Band at the corner of Dietz and Main streets, and Tobiassen said Orpheus Theatre will present characters from its next production, "Little Shop of Horrors."
The Grand and Glorious Garage Sale is held rain or shine. The forecast for Saturday calls for showers with a chance of thunderstorms, the National Weather Service said Thursday.
