Area towns to host outdoor cinema

A local business is bringing the drive-in movie theater experience to some unexpected places.

The Jefferson-based Movies Under the Stars will partner with local venues to present drive-in movies on a 20-by-11-foot inflatable screen. A series of films at Maple Shade Farm in Delhi will begin Friday with a showing of “Madagascar 3.” The series, called “Mooo-vies on the Farm,” will continue on select Fridays through August.

The idea for the film series started as a way to celebrate summer, according to Movies Under the Stars owner Diane Dubshinski.

“We are so fortunate to live in such a beautiful area with wonderful families and a strong sense of community. We wanted to come up with an idea to bring people together, to be able to celebrate our spectacular summer evenings here in the Catskills, and to have some good old family fun,” Dubshinski said in a media release. “We are so excited to have the opportunity to partner with Jay and Abby Wilson of Maple Shade Farm in Delhi. We could not think of a better-suited, and more beautiful, area farm to kick off Movies Under the Stars.”

In keeping with the community-friendly theme, organizers are seeking to pair vendors, refreshments and additional entertainment with their movies. Friday’s film will feature barbecue prepared by Pit Crew Bar-B-Q of Oneonta. A standing invitation is extended to musicians and other performers to participate in an open mic before each film showing. Sign-up is available online at catskillsoutdoormovies.com. And local vendors can contact organizers to sign up to sell their wares.

The portable, inflatable screen will likely make other appearances throughout the region, Dubshinski said. The company plans to show “Escape From Planet Earth” at the Jefferson Heritage Day in Jefferson on July 3, and is seeking out other events to host “the Catskills’ Roaming Outdoor Movie Theater.” And anyone who fancies bringing the big screen to their backyard can contact Movies Under the Stars for rental information.

“Mooo-vies on the Farm” will continue July 12, with the film to be determined. Viewers can vote for their choice at catskilloutdoormovies.com. Next up will be “Brave” on July 25, followed by “Dirty Dancing” on Aug. 8. “Oz the Great and Powerful” will end the series on Aug. 23. Gates will open at 6 p.m., with movies to begin five minutes after dark.
