Seven area teachers to be honored with awards

Seven area middle and high school teachers will be honored Thursday for their assistance in training the next generation.

The Awards for Exemplary Service will be presented at the 21st annual Celebration of Teaching reception starting at 4 p.m., April 24, in the Craven Lounge of the State University College at Oneonta. The event, that coincides with National Teacher Appreciation Week, also recognizes all area teachers who have contributed their time and expertise to the college’s Secondary Education program.

Dennis Banks, chairman of the college’s Secondary Education Department, said the award goes to secondary teachers who have helped the department’s students in a variety of ways, including allowing them to student teach, observe or present in the classroom.

“Our programs could not exist without the cooperation of such teachers,” he said.

Students are required to have such field experience in order to be certified.

“That his how they learn,” he said.

Recipients of the award have gone above and beyond others involved, including helping for a minimum of five years and working with the college as a cooperating teacher or college supervisor. These teachers, who serve as role models for SUNY Oneonta students, “must demonstrate high standards of knowledge in content and pedagogy, service to the school and community, and a love of learning,” according to a media release.

One of those who will be receiving the award is Jacqueline R. Buckler, who teaches the full range of mathematics courses at Afton Central School. She has been with the district for 13 years. She welcomes student teachers because “someone had to help me out” when she was starting out.

“It’s a way of giving back,” she said.

She also gets new ideas about how to present material.

“It’s an honor,” to receive the recognition, she said.

Others who are being honored are: Eileen Robbins, who has taught eighth-grade science at Oneonta Middle School for 14 years in her 32-year career.
