---- — While sharing memorable moments from their school experiences, Oneonta High School students on Tuesday thanked Dollars for Scholars and its donors at the program’s award ceremony.

The event at the Hunt Union Ballroom at State University College at Oneonta presented $42,500 to 57 graduating students, generally between $500 and $1,000.

In introducing the students, organization President Jackie Rowe told those in the audience, including donors, their willingness to contribute to Dollars for Scholars not only supports students financially but also gives them confidence to succeed.

“Thank you for valuing learning, and thank you for valuing students” who want to pursue higher education, she said.

Besides their thanks, the students shared some personal reflections. They included Courtney Hays, who will be attending the College of Saint Rose as a music industry major.

Hays spoke about her elementary band director Charles England, who died in 2009.

“His memory has driven me to be the best I can be,” she said.

Zachary Joseph will be attending SUNY Institute of Technology at Utica/Rome. He said this soccer experience has taught him the importance of such values as commitment, hard work and dedication.

Because of that, “if I really want something, I can achieve it,” he said.

Nicholas Capra was the first student from Oneonta Community Christian School to receive an award. He will be attending SUNY Oneonta where he will major in chemistry. He cited winning best-project awards at two science fairs among his accomplishments.

In congratulating the students, Rowe said: “We wish everyone success in all your future endeavors.”

Afterward, she said it was wonderful to hear their individual stories.

“They certainly have a accomplished a great deal,” she said.
