Delhi teen named Delaware Dairy Princess

A new Delaware County Dairy Princess began her reign after a coronation dinner May 31 at South Kortright Central School.

Stephanie Bishop, 16, of Delhi, was unopposed for the title, said Barbara Hanselman, chairwoman of the Delaware County Dairy Promotion Committee. Bishop will be assisted by 12 ambassadors in carrying out her responsibilities.

This is the 52nd coronation in the county, Hanselman said. The Dairy Princess program is an important way of promoting the industry.

Bishop, a junior at Delaware Academy Central School, said she has been a part of the program for most of her life.

“Living on a dairy farm, the industry is very important to me.” she said, adding that she's looking forward to supporting it and helping people understand its importance in the county.

Aside from the health benefits of milk and dairy products, she will talk about such subjects as how dairy farming supports the local economy and how farmers are stewards of the environment. She said her first appearance at the Harpersfield Grange went well, and additional events are being scheduled.

Hanselman said the princess and her court are scheduled to serve milk punch at various branches of the National Bank of Delaware County. The week of the Delaware County Fair is probably their busiest, with activities including talking to fair-goers and building a giant sundae. They will also be attending a variety of dairy festivals and community days.

Also at the dinner, the Young Farm Family Award was presented to cousins Jeff and Brian Haynes, 38 and 33 respectively, and their families. The cousins are the sixth generation to operate the Char-Marie Farm in Bloomville.

“It’s a real honor” to be mentioned along with other families that have won the award, Brian Haynes said. “It was a nice surprise for the family.”
