Arts festival to feature music, family fun

More than 100 juried artists from a variety of disciplines will be selling their wares at the 19th Annual Colorscape Chenango Arts Festival this weekend.

Exhibitors include ceramics, drawings and pastels, fiber, glass, jewelry, metalworks, mixed media, oil and acrylic paintings, photography, sculpture, watercolors, wearable fiber and wood.

The festival is expanded this year thanks to recent improvements to East and West Parks in Norwich, which has allowed more artists to participate, according to a media release.

In addition to the juried exhibit and sale, the festival includes live music, children’s activities and a competitive poetry slam. Culinary Arts Awards also will be given for “Best Taste of Colorscape” and “Best Booth Award.” Admission to all venues is free.

Hands-on activities for children will be available in the Art Zone, presented by Golden Artist Colors, which will allow children ages 10 and older to experiment with art and acrylic paints. Younger children can create slap bracelets, woven mats, 3-D butterflies and temporary tattoos. A painting area for young children will also be available.

Volunteers from the Friends of Rogers Environmental Education Center of Sherburne will lead visitors in making “Recycled Treasurers” out of otherwise unuseable items. Materials will be provided.

The West Park Stage will offer family-friendly music, dance, story and play opportunities among the live performances, including music by Mustard’s Retreat and The Burns-Kristy Band. DrumZZone will feature African drums for participants to play, and the Perkins School of the Arts will present a dance showcase.

American fiction writer Dustin Warburton, known for his children’s book “Dennis the Wild Bull,” co-written with former NBA player Dennis Rodman, will be among the authors on hand Saturday during the festival.

Book signings will be available by local authors, including popular children’s author Suzanne Bloom. Attendees can also participate in Colorscape’s Interactive Poetry Board, or enter Colorscape’s Story Writing Contest. Submissions are due by noon Sunday, with winners announced at 3 p.m.
