ONEONTA — An estimated 1,000 alumni and parents will visit SUNY Oneonta for Homecoming & Family Weekend 2012 from Friday through Sunday. Scheduled events range from a faculty showcase of teaching and research to a concert by rap-rock band Gym Class Heroes, whose drummer, Matt McGinley, attended SUNY Oneonta.
Admission to many of the weekend’s events is free, and members of the community are invited to participate. The full schedule of events is available at www.oneontaalumni.com.
In conjunction with Homecoming & Family Weekend, SUNY Oneonta will offer "Life of the Mind III" on Friday. The annual event highlights the teaching, research, creative activity, service and other contributions of SUNY Oneonta faculty to the intellectual life of the campus community. Neil Chippendale, a 1970 graduate of SUNY Oneonta, will be the keynote speaker. His lecture, “Making Good Teachers,” will begin at 8:50 a.m. in the Waterfront Cafe at the Hunt College Union. A faculty showcase of posters and exhibits will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hunt Union Ballroom.
A highlight of Saturday’s events will be the Gym Class Heroes concert at 8 p.m. in the Alumni Field House. Tickets to the show can be purchased at www.oneontatickets.com.
Other events Saturday include the annual craft fair from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hunt Union and a “Raptors and Birds of Prey” program by wildlife rehabilitator Cindy Page at 1 p.m. at the College Camp Lodge, located off Upper East Street at 119 Hoffman Road.
New this year is a self-guided Cooperstown Beverage Trail tour with stops at the Fly Creek Cider Mill, Bear Pond Winery, Cooperstown Brewing Company and Brewery Ommegang.
The annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House. The 2012 inductees are: the 1979 Field Hockey Team; Albert Sosa of Oneonta, longtime SUNY Oneonta wrestling coach; Dr. James Coon ’77 (basketball); Dr. Jeffrey Saal ’71 (honorary inductee); Susan Lee-Miller '90 (cross country); Billy Kapogiannis ’93 (soccer); John Pufky ’99 (lacrosse); and Missy LaBarra ’03 (softball)
Highlights of the weekend’s intercollegiate athletic competitions include women’s field hockey games against Union College on Friday and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute on Saturday. The complete schedule of athletic events is available at oneontaathletics.com.
“Translation,” an exhibition by assistant art professor Rhea Nowak, will be on display Friday and Saturday at the Martin-Mullen Gallery in the Fine Arts Building. The Project Space Gallery will feature an Alumni Art Exhibition.
The Mask and Hammer Theatre Club will present a production of two of Milcha Sanchez-Scott’s one-act plays, “The Cuban Swimmer” and “The Dog Lady,” in the Hamblin Theatre at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday and at 2 p.m. Sunday. Tickets can be purchased at oneontatickets.com.
The events of Homecoming & Family Weekend will conclude on Sunday morning with the 2.6-mile campus Fun Run/Walk sponsored by the SUNY Oneonta Inter-Greek Council. Event registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the race is at 9:15.
