Agency, Bassett team up to promote kids' health

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Delaware County has teamed up with Bassett Healthcare to encourage healthier lifestyles in Delhi preschoolers and their families.

Thanks to a $2,000 Bassett mini-grant, Cooperative Extension is working with area preschoolers and their families to foster some of the goals of Bassett’s 5-2-1-0 project.

The project requires eating five or more fruits and vegetables, limiting recreational screen time to two hours or less, partaking in one of more hours of physical activities and consuming zero sugary drinks for better health.

The 5-2-1-0 Color Me Healthy Gardening program seeks to provide Delhi preschoolers and their families with the tools to plant a garden and grow and cook vegetables, Bassett project coordinator Chris Burrington said.

Cooperative Extension Executive Director Jeanne Darling said the mini-grant helps cover cost of supplies and materials including seeds, plants pots and soil.

The two one-hour sessions include include games, stories and healthy snacks. They will also work with seeds and plants that can be brought home.

With activities that include dancing to songs, “the kids just really love it,” Darling said. “They learn where food comes from and making healthy food choices.”

The agency will be working this summer with preschool and older children at a variety of venues.

The program continues today from 10 to 11 a.m. at the SUNY Delhi Campus Child Care Center. A session was held there Monday.  Other scheduled sessions are 10 to 11 a.m. May 20 and 21 at the Delhi Campus Child Care Center, and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Cannon Free Library on June 4, 6, 11 and 13.

A session was also held April 29 & 30 at the United Ministry of Delhi.

Registration is required. Call Cooperative Extension at 865-6531 or online at www.ccedelaware.org.
