---- — A diversity of entertainment awaits New Year’s Eve revelers in Oneonta. With First Night activities revitalized in 2009, the evening will once again be “a remarkable community project,” First Night Oneonta committee board chairman David Hayes said.
First Night buttons, needed for admission, are $15. They will be available at all venues and at the big white tent at Kim Muller Plaza on New Year’s Eve.
“The support we’ve gotten has been nothing short of outstanding,” Hayes said. This includes talent, ideas and generous financial support. With a variety of cultural activities set in an alcohol-free environment, “It’s going to be outstanding.”
The First Night parade begins at 4 p.m., with the lineup starting at 3 p.m. on Elm Street. It continues continues down Main Street and ends at Foothills Performing Arts and Civic Center. Following that a wide variety of entertainment will be at venues around downtown. The events end at 10:15 p.m. with fireworks.
The musical entertainment includes a 5 p.m. performance by the Catskill Symphony Orchestra at the Oneonta Theatre. Hayes said that the 500-seat theater could be filled because the show provides an opportunity for people who might not otherwise have a chance to hear a full symphony.
At the Foothills production room, Broadway Cabaret will be performing at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. with “Sing a Song of Broadway.” The group presents a musical cabaret featuring local residents Greg and Jeannie Langdon and college students home for the holiday who include their daughter Xandry Langdon, Amanda Blake, and Shane Heidecker. Oneonta High School students Kevin Hait and Chase Thomas will also be performing. Selections include: songs from “Les Miserables,” “Pirates of Penzance,” and “Into the Woods.”
Other performances include at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. the Horseshoe Lounge Playboys upstairs at the Oneonta Theatre, and at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. the Dady Brothers perform at the First Presbyterian Church. A poetry reading will take place at 2 p.m. at Wilbur Mansion. Oneonta World of Learning will be offering children’s activities starting at 5 p.m. in the Foothills atrium.
