TV show spotlights Delaware fishing

The pleasures of fishing on the Delaware River will be available Saturday for all to see on cable television. Two people familiar with the broadcast said such exposure will be good for the area.

The episode of “Backwoods Angler TV,” will be aired at 8:30 a.m. in the Binghamton, Utica and Oneonta areas on WISF. On Time Warner Cable in Oneonta that is carried on channel 27. It will be streamed online at www.backwoodsanglertv.com.

“Backwoods Angler” host Blaine Mengel takes viewers to some of the best-known and some of the most hidden lakes, rivers and ponds in the Northeast for freshwater fishing, show co-producer Chris Manley said. This episode, filmed about a year ago, focuses on brown trout fishing on the Delaware River in Hancock and Deposit. A few rainbow trout also were caught.

“We consider ourselves as the Northeast authority for freshwater fishing from Maine to Virginia and all the way out to Ohio,” Manley said.

“It’s fantastic,” Delaware County Tourism Director Jim Thomson said of the county’s appearance on the show.

“Being on a nationally syndicated show brings a tremendous amount of attention to resources we have here in Delaware County.”

The “phenomenal” fishing resources are relatively unknown, he added, and with the opening up of the Cannonsville and Pepacton reservoirs to recreational opportunities, “it should just keep getting better.”

Mengel has been a fishing guide for more than 13 years, Manley said. About seven or eight years ago, he was introduced to brown trout, something for which the Delaware River is known.

“It was right up his alley” for this episode of the show,” Manley said, adding that spin fishing, instead of fly fishing, is a different approach to the more traditional fishing in the area.

This was the first time the show had filmed in the region.

“We love it,” Manley said, adding that while it’s rural, it’s also accessible to metropolitan areas.

Plans are being made for the show to return later this year to film additional episodes.
