Robynwood arranges another kind of senior prom

A prom is not only for high-school seniors. On Thursday, Robynwood Adult Home in Oneonta threw a prom for its 38 senior citizens and 14 residents of Chase Nursing Home in New Berlin.

Robynwood activity director Brianne Thompson said she started planning the event in April.

“It’s prom season, and all the ladies wanted to dress up and go to a senior prom,” she said. Chase is a separate organization but her organization is building a relationship with them, she said.

“Everyone is in the mood, wearing dresses and getting involved,” she said. “It feels like the right thing to do.”

She graduated from Oneonta High School, so in planning the first such event, she contacted high school band director Michael DePauw about helping with the entertainment. He was there Thursday with 21 members of the school’s jazz band.

With school winding down, this was a good time of year for the performance, he said. “It was nice to be able to help out and do something outside the school.” They were scheduled to play songs of Glen Miller, Benny Goodman and songs that would be appropriate for the participants.

Waiting for the event to start, a number of residents shared their enthusiasm. Carole Walde, 68, has been a resident for three years. She was surprised to see how well the room was decorated.

“I never went to a prom, so I liked the idea,” she said. Like many of the other women she was wearing a dress donated by Rainbows End Weddings and More. “I think it’s great that Robynwood did this,” she said. “You can’t do this everyday.”

Eleanor Van Curen, 89, said she was resident for about a year.

“I think its beautiful,” she said. Nearby was Don Landry Sr., 83, who was a resident for about a year.
