Business Beat: Local group raises more than $30K through breakfast fundraisers

Flapjack Fundraisers generated the most money for local nonprofit and other organizations at events held at Applebee's restaurant at Southside Mall in Oneonta.

The restaurant helped local groups raise $30,198, officials from the restaurant said, giving the event breakdown as follows: 34 Flapjack Fundraisers raised $27,804; 13 Dining to Donate events raised $958; and Make-A-Wish fundraisers raised $1,436.

At Flapjack Fundraisers on Saturday and Sunday mornings, Applebee's is host to schools, youth sports or youth service organizations for pancakes and bacon.

T.L. Cannon Companies, the franchisee for 61 Applebee's Neighborhood Grill & Bar restaurants in upstate New York and Connecticut, provided more than $2.42 million in fundraising and in-kind support to community nonprofits and organizations in 2011, a $10,000 increase over the previous year, a recent media release said.

Mohawk Valley-area groups raised more than $151,000 for their respective organizations through these opportunities.

Attraction adds jobs

Howe Caverns Adventure Park in Howes Cave will host its annual Job Fair from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 31.

General Manager Robert Holt said 96 new positions were created because of last year's expansion and the development of Howe High Adventure _ adding the Sky Trail ropes course and zip line.

"This year, we'll be adding an air jumper, rock climbing wall and New York state's firstH2OGO course," Holt said in the release. "We anticipate that these new items will create 20 additional positions."

The job fair is open to candidates 16 and older, full- and part-time positions are available and include cave tour guide, photographer, parking lot/greeter, retail clerk and motel housekeeper, gem/geode attendant, custodian, dishwasher, motel desk and ticket office clerk and operators for adventure attractions.

The job fair will be at the park's cafe in the visitor center at 255 Discovery Drive.

Howe Caverns, the largest cave open to the public in the Northeast, is now known as Howe Caverns Adventure Park and is located off Exit 22 of Interstate 88.

Howe Caverns' winter hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily between Nov. 1 and March 31, except on Thanksgiving and Christmas, when it is closed, the release said.

Summer hours are from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from April 1 through October.
