Davenport lumber mill to reopen in spring

A Delaware County lumber mill, closed since 2008, will reopen in the spring, its owners said Wednesday.

Baillie Lumber, which bought the Greene Lumber Co. of Davenport in May 2005, closed it in November 2008 because of “economic conditions,” according to a media release from Baillie and the Wagner Group of Companies, which will operate the mill in tandem.

The two companies, which have the same ownership, expect to hire 40 workers initially, with the prospect of expanding the workforce to 60, according to the media release. Recruitment efforts for positions are currently under way, the companies said.

Jeff Lisk, who managed Greene from 2005 to 2008, will again run the mill.

“We’re excited about the opportunity to reopen Greene,” Lisk was quoted as saying in the press release. “Through the winter, we plan to upgrade much of the equipment in the mill so that production should flow better than ever.”

Tom Gerow, head of procurement for Wagner, will spearhead procurement efforts at the reopened mill.

“With this facility, we will be able to provide our forestry, logging and log buying services farther into eastern New York and bring our honest, no nonsense business ethic as well,” Gerow said.
