Ommegang to host concert, unveil new beer

Brewery Ommegang will hold two prominent events the week of Labor Day.

On Labor Day, Monday, Ommegang will hold the first tasting and sale of its new beer, Take the Black Stout.

Take the Black Stout is the second in a series of beers Ommegang has produced in collaboration with HBO for its show “Game of Thrones.” The first of these beers was Iron Throne Blonde Ale, released in March.

According to Ommegang’s website, Take the Black Stout is a 7-percent alcohol beer with licorice root and star anise spices. The site goes on to say that the beer’s aromas include chocolate, coffee and earthy hops.

Ommegang’s brewery in Cooperstown will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Labor Day. Visitors can taste Take the Black Stout during a launch event in Ommegang’s outdoor tasting tent during this time. Tours, tastings and café service will be available as usual.

The “Game of Thrones”-inspired beers will be available as part of a prix fixe menu at the cafe. Diners will receive a Duvel Apero glass to take home. Bottles of Take the Black Stout will be sold with a limit of one case per customer.

The brewery will also host a concert by The Black Crowes on Thursday, beginning at 7 p.m. The London Souls will be the opening act.

Tickets are $45 for general admission and $60 for general admission and camping. Gates open at 5 p.m. The show is open to all ages, with a cash bar for concertgoers ages 21 and older. The concert will be the last of Brewery Ommegang’s 2013 Summer Concert Series. It will also be one of the final shows of The Black Crowes before their 2014 hiatus.

Ommegang’s winter hours of noon to 5 p.m. daily begin Tuesday. Ommegang will be closed Thursday in preparation for the concert.
