---- — Two friends have turned their love of baking into a business.
Simply Sweets sells cookies, pies, cakes and other creations whipped up by Betty Lee and Erin Falco. They work in a commercial kitchen in the town of Maryland that was converted from a guest house, Lee said.
“Erin and I bake for our family, and we have always worked well together in the kitchen,’’ she said. “We have always talked about starting a business together and recently decided to go for it.’’
They acquired certification from the state Agriculture and Markets Department, she said, and started selling at the Oneonta Farmers’ Market in June.
After the farmers’ market season ends, Lee said, they plan to
fill custom orders for pies, cakes and other baked goods, especially during the holiday season.
The women manage their business among other family and professional demands, said Lee, 24, a 2006 O
neonta High School graduate who works part-time as a nurse and is a full-time graduate student. Falco, 28, is a stay-at-home mother, Lee said.
Thursdays and Fridays are designated baking days, Lee said. The women make unusual cookies, such as maple bacon, because they want to offer products not available at stores, she said. Their “everything but the kitchen sink’’ cookie includes peanut butter, oats, chocolate and butterscotch chips, M&Ms and raisins, she said, and a large cookie costs $2.50.
Lee said to reach the bakery business, send email to email@example.com or visit Facebook.
