Revitalization event planned for Oneonta

Randy Crawford of Crawford & Stearns, an architectural and preservation planner based in Syracuse, will give a presentation on main street revitalization Jan. 29 at the Elks Club in Oneonta.

Crawford has extensive experience with downtown revitalization efforts in Potsdam, Watertown, Auburn, Syracuse and other communities. He has also worked on several Oneonta properties that are on the state and national registers of historic places, including the Greater Oneonta Historical Society’s History Center, The Armory, the Swart-Wilcox House, the Unitarian Universalist church and the Wilber Mansion.

He will describe his experiences working in Oneonta and other upstate communities and discuss the potential for continuing revitalization in downtown Oneonta.

City Manager Michael Long will introduce Crawford, who will take questions after his presentation.

The 7 p.m. event is being sponsored by the Greater Oneonta Historical Society and Main Street Oneonta. It is free and open to the public and will be preceded by Main Street Oneonta’s annual meeting at 6 p.m.

Southside Petco to open 

The new Petco store on the Southside of Oneonta will open the weekend of Feb. 9, the company said in a media release.

The grand opening events will include pet adoptions, giveaways and discounted services, along with activities designed to introduce the store and its team to the community.

Petco says the store will sell everyday necessities and a wide variety of high-quality food options, including natural, organic and raw food selections. In addition, the store will host pet adoption events throughout the year.

A ribbon cutting will be held at 8:55 a.m. Feb. 9, and the first 100 customers will receive a $10 Petco gift card. The following day, the first 50 customers will receive free Petco tote bag. The highlight that day will be a Rainforest and Reptiles program at which exotic reptiles from around the world will be displayed. Pet adoptions will be offered both days.
